Manfred Lachs was a Polish diplomat and jurist who lived from 21 April 1914 to 14 January 1993, born in Stanislawow in what was then Poland and dying in The Hague. He held Polish government posts in foreign affairs from 1947 to 1960 and was a professor at the University of Warsaw from 1952 until his death, building a scholarly reputation that significantly shaped the postwar development of international law, particularly space law. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1967 and served continuously until his death in 1993, one of the longest tenures in the Court's history, including a term as its President from 1973 to 1976.
