Lorraine Schembri Orland is a Maltese judge born on 21 June 1959 in Pieta, Malta. She earned a doctorate in laws in 1981 and a magister juris in European law in 1996 from the University of Malta, served on the executive board of the International Council of Women from 1988 to 1990, and helped draft legislative reforms removing gender-based discrimination from Maltese law from 1991 to 1993. Appointed a judge in Malta in 2012 by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, she presided over the Civil Court in cases involving fundamental human rights, probate, guardianship and succession, before being elected and sworn in as Malta's judge at the European Court of Human Rights in September 2019, becoming the first woman to hold that seat.
