Henri Donnedieu de Vabres was a French jurist who lived from 1880 to 1952 and served as the principal French judge at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg after the Second World War, with Robert Falco as his alternate. Born in Nimes to a Protestant bourgeois family, he was a professor of criminal law at the University of Paris, director of the Paris Institute of Criminology and president of the International Association of Penal Law, and was the only Nuremberg trial judge who was not a professional sitting judge, in part because judges who had served under the Vichy government had sworn allegiance to it. At Nuremberg he argued against overly broad conspiracy charges and protested the conviction of Colonel General Alfred Jodl, and he later advised on the drafting of the United Nations Genocide Convention, having championed the idea of a permanent international criminal court both before and after the war.
