The British Nationality Act 1948 is a United Kingdom statute that created the status of Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies and established, alongside it, the status of Commonwealth citizen, granted to citizens of Commonwealth countries. It gave citizens of the United Kingdom, its colonies and other Commonwealth countries the right to live and work freely in the United Kingdom without needing a visa or work permit, reflecting the idea of a common British subject status across the Commonwealth. The act was passed partly in response to Canada's own Citizenship Act of 1946, which had created a distinct Canadian citizenship separate from British subject status, prompting the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries to define their own citizenship categories in turn. It is closely associated with the arrival of the ship Empire Windrush in June 1948, whose passengers from the Caribbean were among the first to travel to Britain under the rights the act conferred, and it remained the basis of British nationality law until it was substantially replaced by the British Nationality Act 1981.
