Butts and bounds

Contract and Property Doctrine

Butts and bounds is a shortened form of abuttals and boundaries of a property. The phrase names the boundary lines delineated between plots of land, usually those that define the end of an estate, as used in legal deeds, titles and similar documents. The boundaries are usually described by features in the property itself, such as trees, outcroppings of stone or riverine brooks, and these features are signified in the legal deed for the purposes of identification. A description by butts and bounds therefore identifies a parcel by its abuttals and boundary lines and by the marks that can be seen on the land.
