Chthonic law is a legal tradition centered on the sacred character of the cosmos. According to the legal scholar H. Patrick Glenn, the chthonic legal tradition emerged through experience, orality and memory, is the oldest of all legal traditions, and can be understood as the law of a culture or a tribe, closely tied to indigenous peoples living in harmony with the earth. More broadly it is used to describe any law that is part of the custom or tradition of a people, distinguishing it from the traditional definition of state-made law, and it is studied as part of legal pluralism.
