Aqsaqal

An aqsaqal, or aksakal, is the patriarch or elder leader of a village or aul in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Volga region, traditionally in charge of all matters relating to customary law. Aqsaqals have historically served as advisors or judges with significant influence over politics and the justice system, and the role continues today in formal court systems in Kyrgyzstan and in the leadership of urban neighborhoods, or mahallas, in Uzbekistan.
