Supreme Court of Texas

National Supreme Courts (Last Resort)

The Supreme Court of Texas, abbreviated SCOTX, is the court of last resort for civil matters in the U.S. state of Texas, including juvenile delinquency cases, which the Texas Family Code treats as civil. A separate body, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, is the court of last resort in criminal matters, and the two courts operate separately so that each can concentrate on certain issues and resolve cases faster. Texas is one of the only states with two courts of last resort for different kinds of cases. The Supreme Court of Texas was established in 1846 to replace the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas. It has its seat at the Supreme Court Building on the State Capitol grounds in Austin and consists of a chief justice and eight justices. All nine positions are filled by election for six-year terms with no term limit.
