The Court of Appeal of Solomon Islands is established by article 85 of the Constitution, with such jurisdiction and powers to hear and determine appeals in civil and criminal matters as the Constitution or Parliament confer on it. Its judges are a President and such other Justices of Appeal as Parliament may prescribe, together with the Chief Justice, the Deputy Chief Justice and the puisne judges of the High Court, who are judges of the Court ex officio. The Governor-General appoints the President of the Court of Appeal, and the other Justices of Appeal, acting in accordance with the advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission. The World Factbook archive lists the Court of Appeal ahead of the High Court among the highest courts of the country, and describes the legal system as a mixed system of English common law and customary law.
