The Orissa High Court is the high court of the Indian state of Odisha, still known by the older spelling of the state name. It was established in 1948. The Government of India issued the Orissa High Court Order, 1948 on April 30, 1948 under section 229 of the Government of India Act, 1935, and an amending order later moved the date of establishment from July 5 to July 26, 1948. On July 26, 1948 the court was inaugurated by H. J. Kania, then Chief Justice of the Federal Court of India, with Bira Kishore Ray as its first Chief Justice and three puisne judges. Before that, Orissa had been under the Calcutta and then the Patna High Court, and from 1916 a circuit bench of the Patna court sat at Cuttack. Thirty district courts were under its jurisdiction at the end of 2015.
