United States District Court for the District of Maryland

Trial and First-Instance Courts

The United States District Court for the District of Maryland is the only federal district court in the state of Maryland, one of the trial level courts of the United States federal judiciary. It was established in 1789 by the Federal Judiciary Act of 1789 and convened for the first time in 1790 at Baltimore, alternating its sessions between Baltimore and Easton until 1822, when it moved to the New Masonic Hall on St. Paul Street in Baltimore. It moved to its present Baltimore site in 1976. Congress created a Southern Division in 1988, and the court moved to its present Greenbelt site in 1994. The court now has two divisions, a Northern Division sitting in Baltimore that covers the City of Baltimore and eighteen counties, and a Southern Division sitting in Greenbelt that covers five counties including Montgomery and Prince George's. It also holds hearings in Salisbury and at federal installations such as Andrews Air Force Base and Aberdeen Proving Ground.
