The Supreme Court of Alabama is the highest court in the state court system of Alabama, in the United States. It is made up of a chief justice and eight associate justices, and each of them is elected in a partisan election to a staggered six-year term. When a vacancy arises, the Governor of Alabama may appoint a replacement to serve out the unexpired term. The state constitution, through Amendment 328 adopted in 1973, bars any member from standing for election once they reach the age of 70, though there is no general limit on how many terms a justice may serve. The court sits in the Heflin-Torbert Judicial Building in downtown Montgomery, the state capital.
