The Arizona Supreme Court is the state supreme court of Arizona and sits in the Supreme Court building in downtown Phoenix. It began work in 1912 with three justices, who took office on 14 February 1912, was enlarged to five justices in 1949 and to seven in 2016, and now has a chief justice, a vice chief justice and five associate justices. The governor appoints each justice from a list recommended by a bipartisan commission, and justices face a retention election two years after appointment and then every six years, retiring at age 70. Its jurisdiction is set by Article VI, Section 5 of the Arizona Constitution. Most appeals reach it through the Arizona Court of Appeals, but it has sole appellate jurisdiction over death penalty cases.
