Feoffment

Contract and Property Doctrine
Origin Medieval Europe, feudal system

Feoffment, or enfeoffment, was the deed by which a person was granted land in exchange for a pledge of service under the feudal system of the European Middle Ages, and it forms one of the historical roots of the common law framework governing estates in land. The mechanism was later adapted so that a landowner could convey property to one person to hold for the benefit of another, a use that developed partly to work around restrictions on transferring land titles directly. The word itself derives from Old French forms related to the Late Latin feoffamentum. Entity-backed identity for the doctrine category value this doctrine already carries as an enum fact, resolved to a doctrine entity by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The enum fact itself stays on the entity unchanged.
