The Government of India Act 1935 (25 & 26 Geo. 5. c. 42) is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that received royal assent on 2 August 1935 and served as the constitution and governing document of British India in its final years before independence and partition. Running to 473 clauses and 16 schedules, it established Burma and Aden as separate Crown colonies and created the Reserve Bank of India and the Federal Court of India. Jawaharlal Nehru characterized it as a machine with strong brakes but no engine and a Charter of Slavery. The act was superseded by the Indian Independence Act 1947 and formally repealed by the Statute Law (Repeals) Act 1976 and again by the Statute Law (Repeals) Act 1998.
