Sovereign citizen movement

The sovereign citizen movement is a loose grouping of anti-government activists, conspiracy theorists and tax protesters, active mainly in English-speaking common law countries, who hold a pseudolegal belief system built on misreadings of common law. Adherents claim they are not bound by government statutes unless they personally consent to them, treat taxation as illegitimate, and reject standard state documentation such as Social Security numbers, driver's licenses and vehicle registration. The movement appeared in the United States in the early 1970s, tracing roots to far-right groups such as the Posse Comitatus, and has since spread to more than twenty countries with a membership that has broadened well beyond its originally white-supremacist base. Sovereign citizen arguments have never succeeded in court, the FBI classifies sovereign citizen extremists as domestic terrorists, and members have been convicted of tax evasion, forgery, bank fraud and related offenses.
