William de Thorpe

Common Law Founders and Commentators

Sir William de Thorpe, who died 27 May 1361, was an English legal official who served as Chief Justice of the King's Bench from November 1346 to October 1350 under Edward III. He built up substantial estates, particularly in Lincolnshire, though the record states his wealth came chiefly from bribes and maintenance. In 1350 he was imprisoned and sentenced to death for corrupt practices, but he was pardoned and had his property restored by 1351. He went on to serve as a baron of the exchequer and held various commissions until he was excommunicated in 1357 for failing to appear at a trial in Avignon.
