Robert Tresilian

Common Law Founders and Commentators

Sir Robert Tresilian, who died 19 February 1388, was a Cornish legal official who served as Chief Justice of the King's Bench from 1381 to 1387. Born in Cornwall and holding land at Tresillian near Truro, he became deeply involved in the political conflict between Richard II and the Lords Appellant. He rose to prominence after the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 by prosecuting the rebels with considerable severity, later becoming a trusted royal advisor and allegedly drafting the questions to the judges that supported the king's position against parliamentary control of royal finances. Charged with treason by the Lords Appellant in November 1387, he was found hiding in sanctuary at Westminster and summarily executed on 19 February 1388, having also faced accusations of judicial corruption in Devon and Cornwall.
