John Hody

Common Law Founders and Commentators

Sir John Hody, who died 24 December 1441, was an English judge from a modest Devon family who served as Chief Justice of the King's Bench from his appointment on 13 April 1440 until his death, when he was succeeded by John Fortescue. He represented Shaftesbury in Parliament in 1421, 1422, 1423, 1425 and 1427, and later sat for Dorset in 1431 and for Somerset in 1433, 1435 and 1437. Despite his short tenure on the bench he was said to have won golden opinions for his integrity and firmness in the administration of justice, and Sir Edward Coke later named him among the famous and expert sages of the law whose decisions influenced Thomas de Littleton's legal writings.
