Thomas Inskip, 1st Viscount Caldecote

Common Law Founders and Commentators

Thomas Walker Hobart Inskip, 1st Viscount Caldecote (5 March 1876 to 11 October 1947) was a British Conservative politician and lawyer who held the offices of Solicitor General on three occasions between 1922 and 1932, Attorney General in 1928 to 1929 and 1932 to 1936, Minister for Coordination of Defence from 1936 to 1939, Lord Chancellor from 1939 to 1940, and Lord Chief Justice of England from 1940 to 1946, while representing Bristol Central and then Fareham in Parliament. His appointment as Minister for Coordination of Defence, a post Winston Churchill had sought for himself, proved highly controversial and drew comparisons at the time to Caligula making his horse a consul, and despite his long legal career he is most often remembered for that defense role rather than for his judicial work. Born in Clifton, Bristol, he died in Godalming, Surrey, in 1947.
