Thomas Denman, 1st Baron Denman

Common Law Founders and Commentators

Thomas Denman, 1st Baron Denman (23 July 1779 to 26 September 1854) was an English lawyer, judge and politician who served as Attorney General from 1830 to 1832 and then as Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 1832 to 1850, having previously sat as a Member of Parliament for Wareham and then Nottingham. He first gained prominence defending Luddites and acting as counsel for Queen Caroline, and as a judge he is remembered for his decision in Stockdale v Hansard and for presiding over the 1841 trial of the Earl of Cardigan. In O'Connell v The Queen in 1844, he led the majority of the House of Lords in quashing the sedition conviction of Daniel O'Connell, a decision that underlined his commitment to the fairness of trials, and throughout his career he was a committed opponent of the slave trade.
