King's Counsel

A King's Counsel is a senior lawyer, most often a barrister, formally appointed in the name of the monarch though in practice selected by the government or judicial authorities of certain Commonwealth realms, in recognition as counsel learned in the law. The rank is one of the most prominent professional honors available to advocates practicing in Commonwealth common law systems and typically signals a high level of skill and experience. When the reigning monarch is a woman the identical rank and title become Queen's Counsel, abbreviated QC, so the name of the honor changes with the sex of the sovereign while the underlying office remains the same.
