Conservator of the peace

In ancient British custom, conservators of the peace, also called wardens of the peace, were individuals given a special charge, by virtue of their office, to see that the king's peace was kept within their jurisdiction. The office was a formal part of English and later British law rather than an informal role, existing to preserve order and the sovereign's peace in a defined area.
