Call to the bar

The call to the bar is the formal process by which a person is admitted to practice as a barrister in many common law jurisdictions. Its precise requirements, terminology, and legal consequences vary considerably from one jurisdiction to another, especially where the legal profession is divided between barristers, who specialize in advocacy, and solicitors, who handle client facing legal work. In jurisdictions that have instead fused the legal profession into a single category of lawyer, admission occurs through enrollment rather than a formal call, though the phrase call to the bar sometimes survives in ceremonial use.
