Code of Lekë Dukagjini

Medieval and Early Modern Constitutional Charters

The Code of Lekë Dukagjini, also called the Code of the Mountains, is one variant of Albanian customary law, said to have been formally organized in the 15th century by the prince Lekë Dukagjini of the Dukagjini region in northern Albania. It remained an oral tradition until Ottoman administrators documented parts of it in the 19th century and Catholic clergy compiled further versions, with the first complete written text published posthumously in 1933 in Shkodër, compiled by the priest Shtjefën Gjeçovi from highland villages including Mirdita. The codification runs to 1,262 articles in twelve sections covering household economics, hospitality, kinship, marriage, land disputes and conflict resolution, anchored by the concepts of besa, personal honor, and nderi, family honor.
