The Spanish Constitution of 1869 was the sixth constitution of Spain's turbulent 1814 to 1873 constitutional period, adopted on June 1, 1869 by the Provisional Government that followed the Glorious Revolution of 1868, which had overthrown Queen Isabella II. Drafted under the regency of Marshal Francisco Serrano, it established a constitutional monarchy, restored the universal manhood suffrage first seen in the Constitution of 1812, and recognized freedom of religion for the first time in Spanish constitutional history alongside guarantees of freedom of the press, assembly and association. The constitution provided the legal framework under which Amadeo I of Spain was invited to the throne in 1870. It ceased to be Spain's governing document after Amadeo's abdication, the short-lived First Spanish Republic and the return of the Bourbon monarchy in 1874, when a new Restoration-era constitution replaced it.
