The Systematic Compilation of Federal Legislation, known by its German abbreviation SR, is the official compilation of all Swiss federal laws, ordinances, and international and intercantonal treaties currently in force, along with the federal constitution, cantonal constitutions, and selected federal decrees and cantonal legal texts. It was created in 1948 to resolve confusion after the Second World War over which laws remained valid, replacing an Official Compilation that had grown to 72 unwieldy volumes with a version arranged by subject rather than by date. Each act receives a unique SR number reflecting its place in this subject based classification, with international law given numbers beginning with zero and domestic law grouped under numbers one through nine, and the compilation is published by the Federal Chancellery in German, French, and Italian, with limited Romansh and English translations, in both a printed loose leaf form and electronically.
