The Civil Rights Act of 1968 is a landmark law in the United States, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson during the King assassination riots. Titles VIII and IX, commonly known as the Fair Housing Act, prohibit discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion and national origin, extended to sex in 1974 and to disability and familial status in 1988. Titles II through VII comprise the Indian Civil Rights Act, applying many of the guarantees of the U.S. Bill of Rights to Native American tribes, and Title X, known as the Anti-Riot Act, made it a federal felony to travel in interstate commerce with intent to incite, promote or participate in a riot.
