Origin Developed in Scandinavia and the Carolingian Empire before the end of the tenth century
An inquest is a judicial inquiry in common law jurisdictions, held in particular to determine the cause of a person's death, and conducted by a judge, jury or government official such as a coroner. It examines sudden or unexplained deaths and may also investigate disasters, may involve an autopsy by a coroner or medical examiner though one is not always mandatory, and can be requested by a coroner, judge, prosecutor or, in some jurisdictions, a member of the public. Possible verdicts include natural death, accidental death, misadventure, suicide or murder, and a verdict of murder or culpable accident can lead to a criminal prosecution in which the accused has a full opportunity to mount a defense. An inquest itself allows witnesses to testify but does not allow a suspect to defend themselves in the same way a subsequent criminal trial does.
