Emilio Betti was an Italian jurist and legal theorist, born in 1890 in Camerino and died in 1968, who helped draft Italy's 1942 civil code and became best known for his contributions to the theory of interpretation. Arguing against Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic philosophy, Betti held that an interpreter's task is to reconstruct what an author originally intended, a position that influenced the American theorist E. D. Hirsch. He supported fascism after the First World War, was arrested in 1944, and was cleared of the resulting charges in 1945.
