Wilhelm Eduard Wilda was a German jurist of Jewish descent who practiced as an attorney in Hamburg before holding professorships at Halle, Breslau and finally Kiel from 1854. Regarded as a founder of comparative jurisprudence, he studied the historical development of Germanic legal institutions, publishing Das Gildewesen im Mittelalter on medieval guilds and Das Strafrecht der Germanen, a history of Germanic criminal law that formed part of his larger history of German law. In 1838 he co-founded, with August Ludwig Reyscher, the Zeitschrift fur Deutsches Recht, a journal devoted to the historical and comparative study of German law that continued publication for over two decades. Wilda's comparative and historical method placed him within the German Historical School of jurisprudence associated with Friedrich Carl von Savigny.
