Civil Law Scholars and Codifiers

Maurice Hauriou (1856-1929) was a French legal scholar and sociologist whose writings shaped French administrative law in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He taught public law at the Toulouse School of Law from 1888, later serving as its dean from 1906 to 1926, and wrote textbooks including Précis de droit administratif et de droit public general (1892) and Précis de droit constitutionnel (1923) that gave French administrative law a new dogmatic basis. He is counted among the founders of modern French public law alongside Leon Duguit and Adhemar Esmein.

How did Maurice Hauriou do in the famous 1882 agrégation examination?

Hauriou failed the agrégation in 1880 and 1881 and then placed first in the grand concours of 1882.

Hauriou failed the agrégation twice, in 1880 and 1881, and then took first place in 1882. That year's examination was known as the grand concours, the great examination, because of the people who sat it. Henry Berthélemy placed fourth, Léon Duguit sixth and Léon Michoud fifteenth. Hauriou's first place led to his appointment in January 1883 as an aggregated professor at the Faculty of Law of Toulouse.
