John Scholasticus

Also Known As John Scholastikos
Civil Law Scholars and Codifiers

John Scholasticus, born around 503 in Sirimis near Antioch, was a Byzantine ecclesiastical figure and legal scholar who trained at a prominent law college before Emperor Justinian I suppressed it in 533. He rose through service as agent and secretary of his church to become Patriarch of Constantinople, serving from April 12, 565, until his death on August 31, 577. He is known for his Digest of Canon Law, which reorganized the church's canons by subject matter, using philosophical principles rather than historical order, reducing the traditional sixty headings to fifty, and for compiling the Nomocanon, a work integrating Byzantine imperial civil law with church canon law. He also authored a catechism addressing Trinitarian theology around 568 and is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
