Bartolus de Saxoferrato was an Italian law professor and legal scholar born in 1313 who died in 1357, belonging to the school of postglossators, or commentators, on Roman law. He wrote extensive commentaries on the Corpus Juris Civilis, treatises on specific legal subjects, and approximately four hundred legal opinions, and is considered one of the most prominent continental jurists of medieval Roman law. His work developed concepts that became part of the civil law tradition, particularly in conflict of laws and constitutional law, and he is believed to be the first theorist of international law, establishing norms governing relations between Italian city states. The adage that no one is a good lawyer unless he is a Bartolist reflects his lasting prestige.
