Anita Augspurg, who lived from September 22, 1857, to December 20, 1943, was a German jurist and radical feminist and pacifist activist. Born in Verden an der Aller in the Kingdom of Hanover, she completed a doctorate in law at the University of Zurich in 1897, becoming the first person to hold a doctorate of law within the German Empire, though German women were not permitted to practice law until the Weimar Constitution took effect in 1922, by which time Augspurg had built her career in activism rather than legal practice; a claim sometimes made that she was Germany first woman lawyer is inaccurate, since other women had earned law degrees before her. She co-founded women suffrage associations in Hamburg in 1902 and in Bavaria in 1913, campaigned for reform of marriage law within the German Civil Code, and took part in the 1915 International Congress of Women at The Hague alongside her lifelong partner Lida Gustava Heymann. Augspurg and Heymann fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and settled in Zurich, where Augspurg died in 1943.
