Alexandru Papadopol-Calimah was a Moldavian-born Romanian jurist, historian and politician who lived from 1833 to 1898. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania from October 1865 to February 1866 and briefly as Minister of Culture and Public Instruction in November 1868, and represented Tecuci County in the Assembly of Deputies. His legal career centered on the commission that drafted the original Civil Code of Romania, which carried Napoleonic civil law into the new Romanian legal framework, and he published early scholarly studies of the French Court of Cassation and of the relationship between old Vlach law and Roman legal statutes. Descended through his mother from the Callimachi family, he identified as a Romanian commoner rather than with his Greek Hellenized heritage, was elected to the Romanian Academy in 1876, and pursued research on Dacian history and medieval Moldavia.
