The Civil Code of Ukraine is Ukraine's private law codification, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 16 January 2003 to regulate personal non-property and property relations on the basis of legal equality, free will, and the independent property status of the parties involved. Built on the pandect system, it originally contained 1,308 articles arranged in six books covering general provisions, an individual's personal intangible rights, ownership and property rights, intellectual property rights, the law of obligations including contracts, and inheritance law. It replaced the 1963 Soviet Civil Code that Ukraine had continued to use after independence in 1991, and its drafting took more than twelve years and required parliament to override a presidential veto before enactment, as Ukraine moved from a socialist legal system toward a civil law system suited to a market economy.
