The Civil and Commercial Code of the Nation is Argentina's primary legal code governing civil and commercial matters, bringing together in one text the private law that had previously been split between a separate Civil Code and Commercial Code. It was drafted from 2011 by a three member commission led by Supreme Court president Ricardo Lorenzetti, with vice president Elena Highton de Nolasco and jurist Aida Kemelmajer de Carlucci, and the commission consulted numerous legal scholars. It was enacted as Law No. 26,994 in October 2014 and took effect on August 1, 2015. Its 2,671 articles are organized into six books covering persons, family relations, personal rights such as obligations and contracts, real property rights, inheritance and succession, and shared provisions, consolidating more than 4,500 articles from the 1869 Civil Code and 1862 Commercial Code that it replaced.
