Italian Civil Code

Civil Codes

The Italian Civil Code, or Codice civile, is the collection of norms governing private law in Italy. It was enacted under Fascist rule by Royal decree no. 262 of 16 March 1942, predating the current Italian Constitution, and it was substantially amended in the postwar period rather than replaced. The 1942 code superseded an earlier civil code that had been in force since 1865, itself essentially an Italian translation of the Napoleonic Code, and some parts of the newer code draw instead on the German Civil Code of 1900.
