The Czech Civil Code, enacted as Act No. 89/2012 Coll., is a comprehensive law governing private relations in the Czech Republic. It was promulgated on February 3, 2012, and entered into force on January 1, 2014, replacing the Civil Code of 1964 that had been enacted under communist Czechoslovakia, a code still in use in Slovakia. The new code brought family law inside the civil code for the first time, expanded contractual freedom and judicial discretion in personal injury cases, and introduced legal instruments new to Czech law such as emphyteusis and trust arrangements. It is organized into general provisions, family law, property rights including inheritance, the law of obligations, and transitional provisions.
