French colonial-born lawyer who became the principal drafter of Louisiana private law codification. Commissioned with James Brown in 1806 to compile the existing French, Roman and Spanish civil law of the territory, he produced A Digest of the Civil Laws Now in Force in the Territory of Orleans, promulgated in 1808. After the 1817 Louisiana Supreme Court decision in Cottin v. Cottin exposed gaps in the 1808 Digest, the legislature commissioned Moreau-Lislet, Edward Livingston and Pierre Derbigny in 1822 to revise it; their Projet, approved in 1824, was promulgated as the Louisiana Civil Code of 1825, drafted in French with the French text held authoritative over its English translation. He also served as a judge for Orleans Parish, as Louisiana attorney general, and as a state senator.
