Dalmacio Velez Sarsfield lived from 1800 to 1875, an Argentine jurist and statesman who single-handedly drafted the Civil Code of Argentina, sanctioned in 1869 and in force from 1871. Drawing on Roman law, French and Chilean codification and his own extensive annotations, the code unified Argentina's private law for the first time and, along with Andres Bello's Chilean code, became one of the two most influential civil codes drafted in nineteenth-century Latin America, shaping the private law of Paraguay and other neighboring states.
