Papirius Justus

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Papirius Justus was a Roman jurist active in the later second century AD under the Antonine emperors. He wrote Constitutionum libri XX, a twenty-book collection of imperial constitutions that helped mark a shift in Roman law from jurisprudential to legislative authority, and eighteen fragments of it survive through their inclusion in Justinian's Digest. Nothing is known of his public career, but his citation by fellow jurists points to real influence in his own time.
