Quintus Aelius Tubero

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Quintus Aelius Tubero was a Roman jurist and historian who flourished in the mid first century BC, during the final decades of the Republic. After abandoning a political career he studied law under Aulus Ofilius and wrote several works on law, and he also composed an annalistic history of Rome in at least fourteen books running from the city's foundation to his own time, drawing on the ancient linen records known as the libri lintei and later cited by the historian Livy. He was a maternal cousin of Cicero, married a daughter of the jurist Servius Sulpicius Rufus, and was the father of the future consul Quintus Aelius Tubero and, through his daughter, the grandfather of Gaius Cassius Longinus.
