Manius Manilius was a Roman jurist and orator of the Republican period who flourished between about 155 and 149 BC. He served as consul in 149 BC and earlier as proconsul of Hispania Ulterior in 155 BC, building a long military and political career alongside his legal work. He authored a collection of standard formulae for contracts of sale, and later classical authors including Varro, Cicero and Brutus cited his legal writings. Cicero, in De Oratore, named him among a small group of jurists whose broad education and old-fashioned generosity in sharing legal knowledge exemplified the ideal orator, and later tradition credited him together with Publius Mucius Scaevola and Marcus Junius Brutus as one of the three founders of the science of Roman civil law.
