Tiberius Coruncanius was a Roman statesman of plebeian origin who served as consul in 280 BC, the year Rome faced war on two fronts, leading an army into Etruria against Volsinii and Vulci while his colleague confronted King Pyrrhus in the south, and was honored with a triumph for his victories. He later became the first plebeian to hold the office of pontifex maximus, serving from 254 to 241 BC, and he is credited as the first Roman jurist to teach law publicly, breaking with the earlier priestly practice of discussing legal cases only in private. None of his writings survive, but later jurists described his legal opinions as numerous and influential. He died around 243 BC.
