Quintus Mucius Scaevola Augur

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Quintus Mucius Scaevola, known as Augur to distinguish him from his relative Quintus Mucius Scaevola Pontifex, was a Roman politician and jurist who lived from about 169 to 88 BC. Trained in law by his father and in Stoic philosophy under Panaetius of Rhodes, he held the offices of tribune in 128 BC, aedile in 125 BC, praetor in 121 BC as governor of Asia, and consul in 117 BC, and Cicero later cast him as an interlocutor in De Oratore, De Amicitia, and De Republica in recognition of his standing as an early authority on Roman civil law. He taught law to Cicero and Atticus, and in 88 BC he alone spoke in defense of Gaius Marius against Sulla's motion to declare him an enemy of Rome.
