Lucius Atilius

Ancient and Roman Law Jurists

Lucius Atilius, sometimes recorded as Publius Atilius or, in some manuscripts, as Acilius, was a Roman jurist of the Atilia family who flourished in the second century BC. He was among the earliest jurists to teach law publicly, following Tiberius Coruncanius, and became the first Roman to be popularly called Sapiens, the Wise, a title later commonly given to jurists. He wrote on the Twelve Tables, Rome's foundational law code, and was noted for his skill as a teacher of law.
