Alfenus Varus was a Roman jurist and writer active around the 1st century BC, traditionally said to have come from Cremona and to have worked a trade before studying law in Rome as a pupil of Servius Sulpicius Rufus. He was the only one of Servius's pupils whose writing survives in excerpts in Justinian's Pandects, seventy of which are drawn from his work. He composed forty books of Digesta, becoming the first Roman jurist to use that title for a legal work, and his surviving fragments show a command of Greek language and philosophy along with a clear, precise style that later scholars praised. He served as suffect consul in 39 BC.
