Sechtae

Ancient and Near Eastern Law Codes

The Sechtae is a collection of sixty-five heptads, that is, groups of seven items, on a variety of subjects in early Irish law. It is described as among the longest and most wide-ranging sources for early Irish law, which makes it an important witness to the range of matters that the early Irish legal tradition addressed. The work is organized as a list of numbered groupings rather than as a continuous narrative code, and its breadth is what distinguishes it from narrower legal tracts. Readers studying early Irish legal texts meet the Sechtae as one of the larger surviving compilations in that body of law.
